ASTURIAS
María:

Asturias is a región situated in the nort of Spain. It is ten thousand square kilometres long and it has a population of around one million inhabitants.

1982, a long time ago Asturias got  a regional government. That means Asturias gets Money from the National government to administer itself in some fields: education, turism, industry.

One million and a half people live inAsturias.

Olaya:

It has three main cities: Oviedo, Gijón and Aviles.

Oviedo is the capital city and it is more or less situated in the centre of Astruias. It is well connected by bus or by train to most of the little cities: Ribadesella, Llanes, Luarca, Villaviciosa.

Oviedo has an important cultural heritage: The Cathedral Saint salvador which has a sacred chamber which contains the Victory Cross, in gold and diamonds and the sacred linum which is said Maria used to wipe Jesus’ sweat in the cross.

Oviedo also has the most important pre-romanic monuments in the world: Santa Maria del Naranco and San Miguel de Lillo.

María:

Gijón is by the seaside, it is bigger in size and population than Oviedo, the capital city. Nowadays Gijón is one of the main touristic sites in our región.

You can’t miss the big beach, the busy shopping streets and the recently built Aquarium.

Olaya:

Aviles is the third city in importance adn it is mostly an industrial city with metal industries around. It is also the most polluted area of Asturias because of big industries.

Asturias has also an airport, called Oviedo airport and it connects Asturias with Madrid, the capital city of Spain and Barcelona, the second  main city.

Gijón has also an industrial harbour so many goods can be trasnported by sea to Europe, even though the main harbour is in Bilbao.

María:

Oviedo, Gijón and Aviles, as they are the main cities in Asturias, have the widest variety of cultural activites: cinemas, theatres, opera etc.

The main museums and exhibitions are also there like the Archeological Museum in Oviedo or the Botanic Garden in Gijón.

Olaya:

We can’t talk about Asturias and forgert nature. An advertising campaing the government did, years ago, called Asturias a Natural Paradise.

The sea and the mountain live close: from the highest mountains of Picos de Europa to the beautiful beaches of Ribadesella or Llanes, there are only thirty kilometres.

María:

Not to forget our traditional dishes, which are the delight of the visitors: spiced beans, the purest beef, a wide veriety of fish and the sweetest dessets.

So don’t forget it, for the next holidays, come to Asturias.

We are waiting for you.
